Abstract: Title compds.(I; one of R1 or R2 = (un)substituted heteroary1, the other = (un)substituted ary1; R3 = H, lower alky1; R4(un)substituted aliph. group; n = 0-2), useful as an antiinflammatory agent, were prepd. by the reaction of II and Y-R4(one of X or Y = mercapto, the other = etherified mercapto). Thus, 8 g 2-mercapto-4(5)-phenyl-5(4)-(3-pyridyl)-imidazole reacted with 0.8 g Na and 1.68 g ethylene oxide in EtOH to give 2-(2-hdroxyethyl)-4(5)-phenyl-5(4)-(3-pyridyl)-imidazole(m.p. 157-159≦̸C)

Thus, 85% m - chloroperbenzoic acid dissolved in chloroform was stirred with 2-methylthio-4(5)-phenyl-5(4)-(3-pyridyl)-imidazole to give 2-methane sulfiny1-4(5)-phenyl-5(4)-(3-pyridyl)-imidazole (m.p.166-169≦̸C)
