PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide monomers, 1-akoxy-2,2-diethyl-6,6-dimethylpiperidines and 1-alkoxy-2,6-diethyl-2,3,6-trimethylpiperidine derivatives that can give the homopolymer and random copolymer resin products with high conversion from the monomers to the polymers. SOLUTION: This invention relates to selected 1-akoxy-2,2-diethyl-6,6- dimethylpiperidines and 1-alkoxy-2,6-diethyl-2,3,6-trimethylpiperidine derivatives where they are substituted with an O or N atom in the 4-position and relates to polymerizing compositions that comprise a) at least one selected from ethylenically unsaturated monomers and b) the piperidine derivative. In another embodiment, the polymerizing composition comprising the ethylenically unsaturated monomer and the 1-akoxy-2,2-diethyl-6,6-dimethylpiperidines and 1-alkoxy-2,6- diethyl-2,3,6-trimethylpiperidine derivatives is used for polymerization. This invention also relates to the intermediate, N-oxyl derivative, the compositions including the intermediate N-oxyl derivative, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a free radical initiator and the polymerization process thereof.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful for producing a narrow polydispersive polymeric resin having a prescribed molecular weight by using an economical free radical polymerization technology. SOLUTION: This 1-alkoxy-polyalkyl-piperidine is a compound of formula I (G1 to G4 are each independently of one another a 1-6C alkyl under a condition that at least one of them expresses methyl, and G1 and G2 , and G3 and G4 are each together to form a 5-12C cycloalkyl or the like; G5 , G6 are each H, a 1-18C alkyl or the like; X is a group such that a free radical X.induced from the X can initiate the polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer), e.g. 2,6-diethyl-2,3,6-trimethyl-4-hydroxypiperidin-1-oxyl, etc., provided that formulae II, III are excluded. Further, in order to obtain the above compound, it is preferable to pass through a reaction of adding sodium hydrogen borate to an ethanol solution of 2,6-diethyl-2,3,6-trimethyl-4-oxopiperidine.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymerizing composition capable of polymerizing an ethylenic unsaturated monomer while controlling the reaction by compounding the ethylenic unsaturated monomer or oligomer with a specific compound. SOLUTION: (A) An ethylenic unsaturated monomer or oligomer is compounded with (B) a compound of formula I or II [R1 to R4 are each a 1-18C alkyl, OH, a halogen or the like, or R1 and R2 and/or R3 and R4 together with the C on which the R groups bond form a 3-12C cycloalkyl, but when Q is a direct bond, CO or the like, one or more out of R1 to R4 are different from methyl; R5 to R7 are each H, a 1-18C alkyl or a 6-10C aryl; X is a group having one or more carbon atoms, and characterized in that the free radical X. derived from the X can initiate polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer; Z1 is H or NR8 (R8 is H, OH or the like); Q is a direct bond, C(O) or the like] (the compounds expressed by formulae III and IV are excluded).

The instant invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydroxy-vinyl-aromatic polymers in particular 4-hydroxystyrene polymers or copolymers by anionic or controlled radical polymerization of the respective monomer, wherein the hydroxy functionality is blocked with a protective group which is subsequently removed by reacting it with a halosilane reagent. The resulting (co)polymers have a narrow polydispersity and are useful for manufacturing photoresists.

The present invention relates to selected glycidyl or carbonyl functional N-alkoxy-4,4-dioxy-polyalkyl-piperidine compounds forming an open chain or cyclic ketal structure, a polymerizable composition comprising a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and b) a glycidyl or carbonyl functional N-alkoxy-4,4-dioxy-polyalkyl-piperidine nitroxide initiator compound. Further aspects of the present invention are a process for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers and the use of glycidyl or carbonyl functional N-alkoxy-4,4-dioxy-polyalkyl-piperidine nitroxide initiators for radical polymerization.
