    Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing a wireless local area network are disclosed. The network includes one or more wireless access points, each including a radio frequency assembly having a variable power output, and an antenna assembly for transmitting and receiving wireless signals. A microcontroller is included for sending a transmission characteristics signal to the wireless local area network. A network manager is included for receiving the transmission characteristics signal and selectively controlling the variable power output of the radio frequency assembly to a predetermined power level.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and method for sending and receiving Voice-over-Internet-Protocol over a wireless computer network utilizing a hybrid wireless voice-over-Internet-Protocol telephone. The invention utilizes a phone controller (302), a wireless handset (100), a base station (310) and at least one access point (304). The wireless handset is equipped with both a wireless personal area network transceiver and a wireless local area network transceiver. The base station (310) is equipped with a wireless personal area network transceiver and a network interface card. Voice-over-Internet-Protocol packets are routed to the phone controller (302) which forwards the packets to either the access point (304) for transmission to the wireless handset (100) over the wireless local area network (306,304,316), to the base station (310) for transmission to the wireless handset (100) over the personal area network (314), or to a server for transmission out of the local area network.
