Abstract: A combustion system includes a flame holder with a plurality of perforations extending through between first and second faces of the flame holder. A main fuel nozzle is configured to emit a fuel stream toward the first face of the flame holder and support a combustion reaction substantially between the first and second faces. One or more pilot nozzles are positioned over the second face of the flame holder and configured to emit pilot fuel streams along respective pilot axes lying parallel to the second face. During periods in which the combustion reaction is unintentionally extinguished, pilot flames supported by the one or more pilot nozzles heat respective portions of the flame holder.
