    Abstract: A peracid precursor characterised in that it corresponds to the following general formula: wherein R represents C1-C20 alkyl, alkoxylated alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or substituted aryl; R' and R'' independently represent hydrogen, C1-C20 alkyl, aryl, C1-C20 alkylaryl, substituted aryl or NR @@ wherein R represents C1-C30 alkyl; and L represents a leaving group, is disclosed. A peracid characterised in that it corresponds to the following general formula: wherein R, R, and R'' are as defined above; or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof, is also disclosed. A bleaching composition which may comprise such a peracid precursor and a bleach-effective amount of a source of hydrogen peroxide is further disclosed. New, proficient and cost-effective compounds for fabric bleaching are provided.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method of esterifying dihydroxybenzene starting materials to synthesize unsymmetrical diesters in high yield. Many of the resultant unsymmetrical diesters are useful in dry bleaching compositions. The method can be practiced by selectively monoacylating a dihydroxybenzene starting material with an acid anhydride to form an intermediate monoester having the structure which is then acylated to form a diester reaction product having the structure wherein R1 is greater than R3 (and both R1 and R3 are alkyl groups) and X is a substituent group which does not participate in the esterification (or which can have a protecting group thereon).

    Abstract: of the Invention The invention provides novel peracid precursors representative of which is the structure: wherein R1 is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms; R2 is OH, -O-R3, or -O-?-R4; and X1, X2, Y and Z are individually selected from H, SO?, CO?, NO2,-NR?+, halogen, R6 and mixtures thereof; wherein R3 of -O-R3 is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms; R4 of -O-?R4 is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms; R5 of NR?+ is selected from H, alkyl of 1 to 24 carbon atoms and mixtures thereof; and R6 is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms. In one embodiment of the invention, the novel peracid precursors are combined with a source of hydrogen peroxide and sufficient quantities of buffer to impart an alkaline pH when the composition is placed in aqueous solution. Preferred embodiments of the invention include wherein R2 is hydroxy, and R1 is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms (monoester); and wherein R2 is -O-?-R4, and R1 and R4 are alkyls of 1 to 20 carbon atoms (diester) and may be either symmetrical (i.e., R1=R4) or mixed (i.e., R1? R4). The mixed diester embodiment appears to provide benefits of mixed hydrophobic/hydrophilic peracid generation to oxidize both hydrophobic and hydrophilic soils. Various detergent adjuncts known to those skilled in the art may be added, such as surfactants, builders, fragrances, antimicrobial compounds and the like.

    Abstract: Polyglycolate compounds are provided having the general structure: (See Formula I) wherein n is an integer from 2 to about 10; R is C1-20 linear or branched alkyl, alkoxylated alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, substituted aryl; R' and R" are independently H, C1-20 alkyl, aryl, C1-20 alkylaryl, substituted aryl, and NR3.alpha.+, wherein R.alpha. is C1-30 alkyl; and L is a leaving group displaceable in a peroxygen bleaching solution by perhydroxide anion. When this compound is combined with a source of peroxygen in aqueous solution, then a plurality of stain removing peracids are formed. Such peracids are formed substantially sequentially beginning with the carbonyl adjacent to the leaving group L. Thus, a first stain removing peracid having the structure (See Formula II) will be formed in amounts approaching quantitative yield.
