    Abstract: A multi random and sequential access media drive (30) for computer mass storage is disclosed. The drive receives both a removable random access media, such as a diskette (50), and a sequential access media, such as a tape cartridge (60) by combining a microdiskette drive with a tape cartridge backup drive in a single enclosure (32). A common motorized media drive and transducer positioner mechanism is used for both types of media, so that the drive requires only a minimum of user accessible drive bays.

    Abstract: A transducer positioner system and method for a combined removable random and sequential access media drive (10) utilizes a single positioner motor (40) to position a random access media transducer carriage assembly (66) as well as a sequential access media transducer carriage assembly (96). The random access media transducer carriage assembly (66) is selectively loadable to a first coarse placement resolution/high speed access lead screw (48) rotationally coupled to a fine placement resolution/low access speed lead screw (94). In a particular embodiment, the coarse lead screw (48) is utilized to position the read/write heads (64, 80) of a diskette (12) while the fine lead screw (94) is utilized to position a read/write head (100) for a tape cartridge (14).
