    Abstract: A modem which includes connections for both land lines and a cellular phone. The modem contains high and low level routines that allow it to perform standard AT commands rationally when connected to a cellular phone, and further perform additional AT commands that access cellular specific features. An applications software program in a computer connected to the modem can provide a number of options for determining whether to use the land line or the cellular phone when both are connected. First, it can default to the land line and only use the cellular phone if the land line is not available. Alternatively, it can first use the cellular phone and only use the land line if the cellular phone signal strength is not sufficient. Further, cellular file transfer operations can be aborted if the remaining battery life in the cellular phone is insufficient to reliably complete the transfer.

    Abstract: A modem (12) is incorporated into a laptop computer (10) and directly connected to either a cellular phone (22), a land line (18), or both. The modem is provided with two connectors (14, 16), one for connection with a cellular phone or external DAA (24), the other for connection to a normal land line via an internal DAA (112). The modem selectively enables either the connector for the cellular phone or external DAA, or the connector for its internal DAA. The modem defaults to selecting the cellular phone or external DAA if it is connected, and only if they are not connected selects the internal DAA. These defaults can be overridden by user commands. Further, the modem can independently power down a connected internal DAA, external DAA, or cellular phone to conserve power.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide telephone connection through a MODEM in a portable computer to be connected to a docking station. SOLUTION: A portable computer 10 has a telephone jack 20 for connection to a telephone line during the operation of the computer 10 in a stand alone mode. The computer 10 is connected to the docking station 11 through connectors 12, 12' and can operate a monitor, a printer, a keyboard, etc., in a disk top mode. Since the docking station 11 has a keyboard and a monitor of full size, the computer 10 connected to the station 11 is functioned as a main computer. A telephone connection means is always arranged in the station 11, it is unnecessary to start a docking mode by connecting a telephone line and the station 11 can be connected to a telephone line through the MODEM only by connecting the computer 10 to the station 11.

    Abstract: A laptop computer contains a built-in modem and has a phone jack for connection to a telephone line while the computer is being operated in a stand-alone mode. A docking station into which the laptop computer may be docked allows the combined unit to be operated in a desk-top mode. The docking station may have a full-sized keyboard and display so that the laptop functions as the main computer a user may employ in the office or home. A telephone connection is already in place at the docking station so that the user need not make a phone line connection to invoke the docked mode, but instead merely nests the laptop in the docking station. In one embodiment, the only components of the modem that are duplicated in the docking station are the phone jack itself and an isolation and 2-to-4 wire converter, so the plug-in connector ordinarily employed between a laptop and a docking station may be of a low-voltage, spike voltage protected form, whereby the coupling used for computer logic and control levels is compatible. The possibility of damage to computer circuits due to the proximity of high-voltage telephone line connections is thus avoided.
