    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject pitch that readily can be melt-spun into carbon fibers by adding a soluble aromatic organometallic compound to the carbon starting material and treating the mixture with heat by gas sparging. CONSTITUTION: In order to obtain the objective soluble metal-containing mesophase pitch, at first a soluble aromatic organometallic compound (preferably metal porphyrin in which the metal is vanadium or nickel) is added to the graphitizable carbon starting substance, the resultant metal-containing carbon starting substance is thermally soaked by gas sparging to prepare the mesophase-containing pitch product. The mesophase pitch (anisotropic pitch) contains about 50 ppm-20,000 ppm of soluble organometallic compound. Then, the mesophase pitch is separated from the pitch product whereby carbon fiber increased in resistance to oxidation, tensile strength and stretch modulus is produced from the resultant metal-containing mesophase pitch.
