    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a β-spodumene structure and further to provide a method for preparing the β-spodumene structure. SOLUTION: This method for preparing a β-spodumene structure comprises preparing a homogeneous plastic batch comprising an inorganic raw material, an organic binder and a vehicle, in which the inorganic raw material comprises about 75-95 wt.% mineral and about 5-25 wt.% glass. A green ware is formed out of the batch, and the green ware is fired to provide a structure substantially constituted of the β-spodumene, and having (0-800 deg.C) thermal expansion and >=4 Ksi strength.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To specify a design parameter of an extruded ceramic honeycomb body constituting a catalytic converter to thereby improve the performance thereof. SOLUTION: An extruded ceramic honeycomb body having an entrance side, an exit side and a plurality of parallel open-ended passages formed by intercrossing cell walls crossing the honeycomb body from the entrance side to the exit side. The passage has a rectangular cross-section having at least a rectangular, aspect ratio of about 1.2:1, and an effective surfacial area coefficient Nμ/Dh of at least about 70 in relation to the honeycomb is regulated by the hydraulic pressure diameter Dh and isothermic Nusselt number Nμ of the rectangular passage.

    Abstract: The mfr. of a low expansion lithium aluminosilicate honeycomb body comprises (i) compounding lithium aluminosilicate glass powder and a clay additive; (ii) extruding the batch through a honeycomb die; and (iii) drying and firing to produce a low expansion body which has a thermal expansion coefft. of below 15 x 10-7/[deg]C between room temp. and 800[deg]C, and a principal crystal phase composed of beta-spondumene solid soln. The clay additive is aluminosilicate clay as 2-30 wt.% of the solids of the batch or is kaolinitic clay as 5-20 wt.% of the solids. The compsn. of the glass powder is (wt.%) 4.9-7.1 Li2O, 6.5-22 Al2O3, 72-86 SiO2 and 0-2 TiO2; the solids of the batch have the compsn. 3.5-7.5 Li2O, 15-30 Al2O3, 65-85 SiO2 and 0-3 TiO2, and the Al2O3:Li2O mole ratio is 1-1.5. The firing temp. of the body is at least sufficient to crystallise the clay and powdered glass.

A process is disclosed for filtering molten metal which comprises passing molten metal through the above described coated filter.
