Abstract: Method for manufacturing optical fiber comprises the steps of laying down co re and cladding materials to form a soot blank, the soot blank including a glas s modifier, loading the unconsolidated soot blank into a draw tower, providing a hot zone to heat a portion of the blank to a temperature sufficient to sinte r the soot into molten glass, and directly drawing the molten glass into eithe r a consolidated, drawn preform rod (cane) or into an optical fiber.
