PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate or substantially reduce a general type of thickness variation identified as short wave variation.SOLUTION: An apparatus for forming a continuous ribbon of molten glass includes: a forming body comprising converging forming surfaces that converge at a root; an enclosure disposed about the forming body; a cooling unit 38 coupled to the enclosure. The cooling unit includes: a fixture 42; a pivot member 46 disposed within the fixture; and a cooling tube 40 coupled to the pivot member. The pivot member is configured to rotate about at least one axis 52, thereby causing the cooling tube to direct a cooling gas flow toward the molten glass flowing over the forming body. When the pivot member is rotated about the axis 52, a lateral position of an end of the cooling tube varies relative to the forming body.
Abstract:
A glass molding system and a method of making glass articles using the glass molding system are disclosed. The glass molding system includes an indexing table, a plurality of enclosures arranged along the indexing table, and a plurality of stations defined on the indexing table such that each of the stations is selectively indexable with any one of the enclosures. At least one radiant heater is arranged in each of the enclosures. A radiation reflector surface and a radiation emitter body are arranged in each of the enclosures. The radiation emitter body is between the at least one radiant heater and the radiation reflector surface and has a first surface in opposing relation to the at least one radiant heater and a second surface in opposing relation to the radiation reflector surface.
Abstract:
An apparatus for drawing a glass ribbon including a forming body having an edge director attached thereto, and an edge roll assembly disposed below the edge director, the edge roll assembly comprising a contact member coupled to the edge roller shaft and a thermal shroud disposed about the shaft to reduce heat loss from the edge director. A method of drawing glass using the edge roll assembly is also described.
