Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a single mode optical waveguide fiber for a long distance communication system having a long repeater interval and a high data signal speed by selecting a cut-off wavelength, etc., so that the cut-off wavelength, etc., in a specific range are given when a cable is formed. SOLUTION: The cores of the single mode optical waveguide fiber having at least the cores divided into two segments are enclosed by a clad glass layer. This waveguide fiber has an effective region larger than 60 μm2, more preferably an effective region larger than 65 μm, over a wavelength range from about 1,530 nm to 1,570 nm. In addition, the waveguide fiber has attenuation below 0.25 dB/Km at 1550 nm and zero dispersion wavelength in a range from about 1,564 nm to 1600 nm and has a dispersion inclination imparting dispersion more negative than about -0.5 ps/nm-Km at 1,560 nm. The cut-off frequency of the fiber in the state that the cable is formed is selected and maintained in a range from about 1,285 nm to 1,500 nm.
