    Abstract: PURPOSE: To carry out a catalytic conversion of an exhaust gas into an innocuous substance without using rhodium catalyst and without supplying ammonia from the outside. CONSTITUTION: An exhaust gas introduced via a first conduit 12 is passed through a first multicellular unit 16. A first catalyst disposed in the first unit converts at least a portion of NOX into ammonia and a modified mixture is produced. The modified mixture introduced via a second conduit 18 into a second multicellular unit 24. Ammonia and the residual NOX are converted into an innocuous substance by a catalytic reaction with a second catalyst disposed in the second unit. The innocuous substance converted are exhausted from an exhausting conduit 26 to the surrounding atmosphere.

    Abstract: An apparatus, system and method are disclosed for modifying a gaseous mixture. The apparatus comprises a unitary body having an inlet end, an outlet end, and a multiplicity of cells extending from inlet end to outlet end, the cells being separated from one another by porous walls, and filler material comprising electrically nonconducting active powder material, loaded into at least part of the volume of the cells, with some of the cells being unloaded and open, wherein a gaseous mixture enters the body at the inlet end through the open cells, and at least some of the gaseous mixture passes through the porous walls and is compositionally modified by the active material, and thereafter the resultant modified mixture passes through the open cells and exits the body at the outlet end. The apparatus can be used in conjunction with other apparatuses which are catalyzed to form a gas modifying system. The apparatus and system are especially suited for conversion of hydrocarbons, NOx, and CO as from auto exhaust, and for Denox applications.

    Abstract: An improvement in a system and method is disclosed for converting exhaust gas from an exhaust gas generating device, to innocuous products in which exhaust gas is contacted with a catalyst system comprising a NOx, CO, and hydrocarbon conversion catalyst. The improvement comprises providing a zeolite upstream of the conversion catalyst and positioned close enough to the device to allow the temperature of the zeolite to reach at least about 100.degree.C within a period of time of no longer than about 100 seconds after start-up of the device, and contacting the exhaust gas with the zeolite to cause adsorption of hydrocarbons during that period. The zeolite has a SiO, to Al2O, mole ratio of no greater than about 250 to 1, and pore openings of about 3.8 to about 6.0.ANG. in diameter.

    Abstract: DUAL CONVERTER ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR REDUCING HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS of the Invention An engine exhaust system and method of controlling hydrocarbon emissions are provided. The system and method are based on the use of two catalytic converter chambers, a first chamber containing a catalytic material and a second chamber containing catalyst as well as molecular sieves capable of adsorbing hydrocarbons during engine start-up and of having hydrocarbons desorbed therefrom when the catalysts reach an effective converting temperature. According to the invention, engine exhaust is selectively conveyed to each of the two converters in a manner such that initially produced hydrocarbon is withheld in the system by the molecular sieves in order to be recycled through the converters and brought into contact with the catalyst after an effective converting temperature has been attained.
