    Abstract: The device consists of a dual-mode waveguide 1 that has a longitudinal axis ÄXÜ, a length ÄLÜ, and a width ÄWÜ, and two pairs of monomode waveguides 2,3 and 4,5, for entry and exit, respectively. In accordance with the invention, the length ÄLÜ and the width ÄWÜ of the dual-mode waveguide Ä1Ü are selected in such a way as to establish, in this guide, light coupling that is greater in the window from 1260 to 1360 nm than in the window from 1480 to 1580 nm, so as to compensate for the significant contrary proximity coupling in these windows, as created between the monomode entry guides 2 and 3 on the one hand and the monomode exit guides 4 and 5 on the other hand. Application to the creation of a 2 x n coupler that has low insertion losses and that is achromatic within the spectral windows from 1260 to 1360 nm and from 1480 to 1580 nm.

    Abstract: An integrated optical proximity coupler comprises first and second parallel straight interaction waveguide segments (27,28). First and second curved input segments (35,34) are connected to the input ends of the straight waveguide segments (27,28), respectively. Input end segments (37,38) are coupled to the curved input segments (33,34). The end segments (37,38) are both the same predetermined size which is determined by conventional optical fibers to which they are to be connected. To make the device broad banded, one of the straight segments must be narrower than the other. To reduce device excess loss, the first straight segment (27) and at least part of its respective curved segment (33) are made slightly narrower than the end segments, and the second straight segment (28) and at least part of its respective curved segment (34) are made slightly wider than the end segments. Thus an asymmetrical directional coupler with the required DELTA beta can be obtained without making the narrow path too narrow.

    Abstract: The acrhromatic 2x2N coupler of the invention comprises (a) a divider (D) by 2 of the optical power received at one of the two inputs (E1,E2) and (b) two groups of single mode waveguides coplanar to the divider and symmetrical relative to the axis of symmetry (Z) of the divider (D), each group being composed of waveguide sections connected in tree and branch fashion by Y junctions (Jii) between one input junction (J11,J12) connected to on e of the outputs of the divider and N sections of waveguide defining N outputs (S1 to S16) of the coupler parallel to the axis of the divider. According to the invention, each of these input junctions (J11,J12) has a rectilinear input br anch (B1) with predetermined length such that the transverse distribution of the optical power at the output of the rectilinear input branch (B1) is centered to a large degree on the axis of this input branch.
