Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single-mode optical waveguide for removing nonlinear effect such as FWM and SPM which occur in a high-performance and high-speed system. SOLUTION: The single-mode optical waveguide has a three-segment core having first to third segments 26, 28, and 30, whose relative refractive indexes, refractive index distributions, and radii are so selected as to have characteristics suitable to the high-performance, high-speed system within a wavelength range of about 1,530 to 1,570 nm. Further, the effective sectional area of the waveguide is >about 60 μm 2 , preferably, >65 μm 2 , and most preferably >70 μm 2 . Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber with a high stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold.SOLUTION: An optical fiber comprises a core having a refractive index profile and a centerline; and a cladding layer surrounding and directly adjacent to the core; where the core contains a dopant material increasing the refractive index in at least one region of the core, such that either: (a) the average longitudinal acoustic wave velocity in the core is within 0.05% of the longitudinal acoustic wave velocity in the cladding layer; or (b) the longitudinal acoustic wave velocity in the core changes by at least 0.2%.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow the parameter modeling in the waveguide fiber to have a core refractive index distribution generating a set of beforehand selected operation characteristics and optimizing attenuation for its special refractive index distribution by that a minimum distribution attenuation waveguide fiber is provided with a minimum effective refractive index and a minimum change rate of the square of a propagation constant when the waveguide is bent. SOLUTION: This core refractive index distribution is a regular type one, and the refractive index distribution of a solid line is provided with a central point 24 of a comparatively low relative refractive index percent Δ%. For instance, a distribution part 6 of a higher relative refractive index percent Δ% may be an (α) distribution or a rounded step distribution also. Further, definitions of a radius and a width are shown. For instance, the radius 3 of a central distribution is a line that a core central line prolongs to a point that the distribution 6 performed with an extrapolation method means an (x) axis. Then, the parameter modeling in the waveguide fiber is provided with the minimum effective refractive index and the minimum change rate of the square of the propagation constant of the minimum distribution attenuation waveguide fiber when the waveguide is bent.
