Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a silicon nitride-coupled silicon carbide honeycomb monolith which compensates the drawbacks of a SiC filter for diesel particulates. SOLUTION: A plasticizable mixture containing powdery silicon carbide by about 60 wt.% to about 85 wt.%, powdery metal silicon by about 15 wt.% to about 40 wt.% and an organic component is prepared. The plasticizable mixture is extruded into a honeycomb monolith having many cells having the entrance and exit ends or faces and porous walls extending from the entrance end to the exit end. Then the honeycomb monolith is dried, heated up to 1,450 deg.C and held in an Ar atmosphere for one hour. The honeycomb monolith is nitrified at the temperature higher than 1,450 deg.C to 1,600 deg.C for an enough period to obtain a silicon nitride-coupled silicon carbide material.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microwave regeneratable particulate filter for diesel engine which collects and burns diesel exhaust particulates, can be regenerated by microwave energy, is excellent in a cost-performance and has high thermal shock resistance and excellent strength durable under chemically and physically severe conditions of ordinary diesel exhaust gas. SOLUTION: This filter comprises a substrate having a surface provided with pores which are extended into the monolithic substrate and a coating which is extended over the surface of the substrate as a substantially continuing layer which is made of fire-resistant oxide material durable for the heating when the substrate is heated from room temperature nearly to 600 deg.C within about 5 min at a frequency of about 2.45 GHz. Abstract: The invention relates to a process of eliminating high chloride-containing incinerator ash and incinerator ash-residue mixtures, without generating excessive heavy metal-containing effluents during the actual vitrification of the ash. The process involves first pretreating the incinerator ash or ash-residue mixture, if needed, whereby the resultant ash contains less than about 3% halogen by weight and less than about 3% C.. Following the pretreatment, the ash is dried and then mixed with any additives needed to make up a vitrifiable batch mixture which will, when subsequently vitrified, form a glass possessing an excellent acid durability. A durability whereby such that the weight loss of the glass in 5% HCI solution at 95 C is 2.0 mg/cm2 or less in 24 hours. This durability results in minimal or non-detectable leaching of hazardous heavy metal or non-metallic specie and is sufficient enough durability such that the vitrified glass will easily pass the EPA's test for leachability. A suitable glass meeting the requirements is comprised of, expressed in terms of weight percent, about 47-76% SiO2, 0.8-29% Al2O3, 3.4-33.0% CaO, and optionally 0-25% R2O, wherein R2O is selected from the group consisting of Na2O, Li2O and K2O, 0-5% Fe2O3, 0-18% B2O3, 0-7% ZrO2, 0-7% TiO2, 0-10% MO, wherein MO is selected from the group consisting of MgO, BaO, ZnO or SrO, 0-8% of at least one member selected from the group consisting of PbO, CdO, Cr2O3, CuO and NiO, 0-4% SO3 with 0-4Y% Cl+F as batched.

Abstract: This invention relates to a method for eliminating the grayish discoloration which commonly develops when lead- free and cadmium-free glass frits axe applied to substrates utilizing an organic medium and thereafter fired to fuse the frit particles into a glaze. The grayish discoloration contains a carbonaceous residue from the organic medium. The method comprises the four general steps: (1) adsorbing a coating of a strongly oxidizing metal ion species onto the surface of the frit particles; (2) mixing the coated frit particles with an organic medium; (3) applying that mixture to a substrate; and (4) firing the mixture to eliminate the organic medium and to oxidize the carbonaceous residue while fusing the frit particles into a glaze.

Abstract: This invention relates to glass frit compositions free from lead and cadmium which, when combined with an organic medium and fired to a glaze, yield a glaze exhibiting a grayish discoloration caused by the presence of a carbonaceous residue therein. The grayish discoloration can be eliminated by incorporating tin oxide in the frit composition which acts to catalyze the oxidation of and/or to directly oxidize that carbonaceous residue.
