Abstract: An optical fiber having an ink layer that includes an optical brightener is described. The optical brightener is a marker that permits identification of the fiber. The ink layer may also include a pigment, where either or both of the pigment and optical brightener may function as a marker for identifying the fiber. Bundles of two or more optical fibers, each of which includes an ink layer containing an optical brightener, are also described.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to lighting diffusing fibers (LDFs) having a flame retardant coating thereon. The LDFs comprise a glass RAL fiber core having a primary polymer coating of a clear, colorless polymeric material having an index of refraction less than that of the glass fiber core and a flame retardant coating applied over the primary coating. The flame retardant coating consist of approximately 35-85 wt.% UV curable polymer forming monomers and 15-65 wt.% of an inorganic, halogen free filler, along with at least one photoinitiator and an antioxidant. In an embodiment phosphor-containing polymer layer can be applied between the primary coating and the flame retardant coating. In another embodiment the phosphor can be added to the flame retardant coating.

Abstract: Small-radius coated optical fibers having large mode field diameter and low bending losses. The coated fiber may have an outer radius of 110 μm or less, while providing a mode field diameter of 9.0 μm or greater and a bending loss when wrapped about a 15 mm mandrel of 0.5 dB/km or less at wavelength of 1550 nm. The coated fiber may have a mode field diameter of 9.2 μm or greater and may have a bending loss at 1550 nm of less than 0.5 dB per turn when wrapped about a 15 mm mandrel, or a bending loss at 1550 nm of 0.25 dB/km or less when wrapped about a 20 mm mandrel, or a bending loss at 1550 nm of 0.02 dB/km or less when wrapped about a 30 mm mandrel. The fibers have a core and a cladding, and a primary coating surrounding the cladding and a secondary coating surrounding the primary coating. The primary coating has an in situ modulus of 0.50 MPa or less, and the secondary coating has an in situ modulus of 1500 MPa or greater.

Abstract: A laminated glass article including a base layer, an anisotropic layer disposed over a top surface of the base layer, and a glass layer disposed over the anisotropic layer. The anisotropic layer may include homogeneous mechanical anisotropic properties measured at intervals of 250 microns. In some embodiments, the anisotropic layer may be an orthotropic layer including homogeneous mechanical orthotropic properties measured at intervals of 250 microns. The homogenous mechanical anisotropic or orthotropic properties of the anisotropic layer may provide a flexible laminated glass article with a high resistance to impact and puncture forces. In some embodiments, the laminated glass article may define all or a portion of a cover substrate for a consumer product.

Abstract: Fiber coatings with low Young's modulus, high tear strength, and/or high critical stress are realized with coating compositions that include an oligomeric material formed from an isocyanate, a hydroxy acrylate compound and a polyol. The oligomeric material includes a polyether urethane acrylate and a di-adduct compound. The reaction mixture used to form the oligomeric material includes a molar ratio of isocyanate:hydroxy acrylate:polyol of n:m:p, where when p is 2, n is in the range from 3.0 to 5.0 and m is in the range from 1.50n - 3 to 2.50n - 5. Control of the n:m:p ratio leads to compositions that, when cured, provide coatings and cured products having high critical stress, high tear strength, and a high ratio of tear strength to Young's modulus.
