Abstract: The system allows packet synchronous speech communications without requiring any centralized device synchronizing all the network stations. Asynchronous, packet switched data traffic accesses the transmission line by means of a distributed contention algorithm, such as CSMA-CD. The access to the line for a speech communication is obtained by the same contention technique used for data transmissions but, once a station has accessed the line for a speech communication, this communication is alloted a synchronous channel which is maintained for the whole communication duration. To obtain that, each station organizes its activity into frames, having a duration equal to the speech packetization time, and builds up independently, on a frame by frame basis, the busy period timing map, by monitoring the transmission line activity and recording the beginning instants of speech packets. Provided that at the occurrence of a particular busy period only the station that has booked it can transmit, each busy period in the map sets up a synchronous channel for a speech communication.

Abstract: The disturbing effects caused by the random delay suffered by the packets in the network are reduced by preventing the first packet of each talkspurt from suffering a random delay lower than a predetermined minimum delay. To this end the delay suffered by the first packet of a talkspurt is estimated and the packet is stored, before being introduced into the output queue of the node, for a time depending on the estimated delay. The delay estimate is made to converge to the actual value by a progressive synchronization of source and receiver clocks.

Abstract: The system allows the implementation of packet-switched synchronous speech communications in the network without requiring any centralized device synchronizing all the network stations. To obtain that, the active periods of each station are subdivided into frames each having a duration equal to the time elapsing between the generation to two subsequent speech packets relating to the same communication; once a station has accessed the line for the speech communications, these communications are allotted time slots which are maintained for the whole communication duration. The slots not allotted to speech communications are allotted to data transmission. The access to the line for a speech communication is obtained by the same contention techniques used also for data transmission.

Abstract: In a packet-switched communications network, the variable component of a delay suffered by the first packet of a message is estimated at a receiving node and compared with a desired minimum delay selected to be just sufficiently large to encompass most expected delay variations, the result of the comparison being used to set a clock controlling reconstitution of the received signal so as to subject the received packets to a delay approximating to but not less than the desired delay. The estimate of the variable delay component is successively updated during reception of further packets to converge on the actual value of that component, the clock at the receiving node being updated accordingly to bring it into synchronization with a transmitter clock, subject to a lag equal to the desired minimum delay.
