    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for accurately measuring the Kerr non-linearity coefficient by utilizing dispersion introduced to a fiber. SOLUTION: A rectangular pulse train is sent to a fiber 5. The pulls have a wavelength where the fiber 5 operates under abnormal dispersion conditions, a peak power for causing modulation instability in the fiber 5, and the ratio of a life time where an average power is lower than a threshold for generating a stimulated brilliance effect to a repetition period The maximum value of an instability gain is measured from a pulse spectrum from the fiber 5 and the Kerr non-linearity coefficient is obtained from the maximum measurement value of the modulation instability gain by minimizing an error for a theoretical curve where such maximum gain is expressed as a function of peak power.
