    Abstract: In a tracking system for radio beacons using generation of TE21 mode components in a circular waveguide to detect misalignment, correct antenna alignment is achieved even where the signal from the beacon is linearly polarized by extracting TE21 mode signals from the waveguide through longitudinal pairs of slots in planes at an angle .pi./4 to one another, phase detecting the difference signals from said pairs of slots to provide signals for aligning the antenna on two orthogonal axes, and in the case of linear polarization rotating the slots about the waveguide axis so as to correspond with the rotation required of a 180.degree. polarizer receiving the waveguide signal through a 90.degree. polarizer so as to provide a predetermined polarization of the output signal.

    Abstract: A tracking system is for a satellite emitting microwave signals from a beacon. The signals are circularly or linearly polarised. A ground antenna passes a signal received to a circular waveguide propagating the higher order TE21 mode. Two pairs of longitudinal slots (A, A'; B, B') on two planes passing through the waveguide axis which planes are angularly spaced from each other by pi/4 radians. The signals of each pair of slots are subtracted. The resulting difference signals are processed to provide signals representing the satellite position in a system of Cartesian coordinates (x, y, z). The angle (theta) which the reference plane containing two axes (x, z) of the system defines with that plane through a first pair of slots (A, A') is caused to equal half the angle defined between the plane of polarisation of the satellite signal and the reference plane, for a linearly-polarised signal.

    Abstract: A coaxial waveguide phase shifter consists of a coaxial waveguide section, comprising an external hollow cylindrical conductor and an internal hollow concentric conductor, and an elongated parallel iris structures extending between the conductors. The inner conductor may be cylindrical and the iris structure formed by multiple-spaced parallel irises which may be differently shaped and fixed to the external or to the internal conductor. By making the cross-section of the internal conductor rectangular, the iris structure may be provided by external surfaces of the conductor.
