Abstract: A computer network efficiently provides a multicast network flow to a multicast recipient across a multihomed network element. The multihomed network element includes network devices that receive multicast data from a source of a multicast network flow. Each particular network device that received the multicast data publishes a notification indicating that the multicast network flow is available from the particular network device. The computer network receives a subscription to the multicast network flow from a multicast recipient, and determines whether to bridge the multicast data across the multihomed network element based on a multicast configuration of the computer network. The multihomed network element provides the multicast data to the multicast recipient from at least one of the particular network devices that received the multicast data from the source of the multicast network flow.

Abstract: A method is performed at a router on a multicast configured to forward a multicast flow. The method comprises: in response to receiving, from a controller connected to the multicast path or the multicast path, an enable command to enable statistics tracing for the multicast flow, determining whether the router has sufficient resources to perform statistics tracing; and when the router has the sufficient resources: responsive to the enable command, enabling statistics tracing to collect statistics for the multicast flow; generating a first request to include the enable command and the statistics; and forwarding the first request towards the controller.

Abstract: A method including receiving, at a first router of a plurality of routers, a first message from the plurality of routers. The first message includes a designated router priority and a weight for each respective router. Based on the designated router priorities, a designated router is elected and a one or more eligible group designated routers are determined. The method determines whether the first router is the designated router or the at least one eligible group designated router. If the first router is the designated router, the first router provides a second message to the remaining routers indicating the eligible group designated routers and their weights.

Abstract: In-band network telemetry for multicast is provided by injecting a synthetic telemetry packet into the multicast. Each first node of each branch replicates the synthetic packet and passes on copy to the next branch and sends one copy down the nodes in the branch sequentially. The synthetic telemetry packet can include flags with have values, including, for example, whether each node should hold or send data collected by the node according to the synthetic data packet, how long a node is to hold collected telemetry data, and what data to collect. The node sends a postcard to the originator with the telemetry data according to the instructions in the synthetic telemetry packet.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a first Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) router includes port interfaces to receive multicast traffic from a first network and forward the traffic to at least one receiver, which is in a sub-network including other PIM routers, and a routing processor configured, in response to a decision for the first PIM router to relinquish being a designated router, to generate a PIM Hello message with a first option descriptor and a first priority, the first option descriptor indicating a staggered handoff process, and send the PIM Hello message, receipt of the PIM Hello message by the other PIM routers being operative to result in a designated router election electing a new designated router, the new designated router being operative to initiate the staggered handoff process causing the first PIM router to continue forwarding traffic until the new designated router has built a multicast routing tree.
