Abstract: The present invention provides heteroatom-doped nanodiamond particles having a fluorescence emission peak derived from the Si-Vacancy (Si-V) center and satisfying the following conditions: (i) when 1 ?L of an aqueous suspension of 1 mass% of said particles is added dropwise onto a glass substrate, and fluorescence spectra at 101×101 points with a spatial resolution of 1 ?m and in a sample range of 100 ?m×100 ?m are acquired using a microscopic Raman device, the proportion of the number of bright spots that emit fluorescence having a ZPL peak at ZPL±X nm (0?X?5) of the heteroatom-V center is at least 50%; and (ii) the average size of primary particles is 2-70 nm.
