Abstract:
1358725 Polymer dispersions DAI NIPPON TORYO KK 8 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970 23 Jan 1971 15 Feb 1971] 41995/71 Headings C3G and C3R A polymer dispersion comprises polymer particles whose average particle size is in the range of from 0À1 to 10 microns and an organic liquid as dispersing medium, the polymer being the product of block- or graft-polymerization of (a) an alkyd resin, whose number average molecular weight is in the range from 500 to 10,000, modified by an unsaturated fatty acid or an oil containing an unsaturated fatty acid, (b) acrylonitrile and (c) at least one other copolymerizable monomer, the ratio by weight of modified alkyd resin to acrylonitrile and other copolymerizable monomer being in the range of from 80/20 to 30/70, the organic liquid being capable of dissolving the acrylonitrile and the copolymerizable monomer(s) but incapable of dissolving the polymer formed on polymerization of acrylonitrile and the copolymerizable monomer(s) and the block- or graft-polymer being stabilized in the dispersion by the modified alkyd resin which is solvated by the organic liquid. The dispersion may be produced by polymerizing acrylonitrile and the copolymerizable monomer(s) in a single stage in the presence of the alkyd resin and liquid, or by first polymerizing at least part of the acrylonitrile, with subsequent addition of the remainder, if any, of the acrylonitrile together with the copolymerizable monomer(s). An aminoplast resin may be added to the dispersion. Examples are given in which dispersions are prepared in mineral spirit, the alkyd resins and graft monomers, other than the acrylonitrile used in each case, being as follows; (i) soybean oil/phthalic anhydride/glycerine/ ethylene glycol resin, styrene and methyl or ethyl methacrylate; (ii) safflower oil-modified alkyd resin, styrene and either methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate and vinyl toluene; (iii) soybean oil-modified alkyd resin, ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate; (iv) safflower oil-modified alkyd resin, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, styrene and vinyl toluene; (v) linseed oil-modified alkyd resin, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and styrene; (vi) cottonseed oil fatty acid/phthalic anhydride /pentaerythritol/ethylene glycol resin, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, styrene and vinyl toluene; (vii) as (vi) except that glycerine replaces the pentaerythritol and the graft monomers comprise methyl methacrylate, N-methylol acrylamide and styrene; (viii) the alkyd resin of (vi), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, styrene, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate; (ix) the alkyd resin of (vii), methyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate or styrene; (x) the alkyd resin of (vi), methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and N-methyl acrylamide; (xi) the alkyd resin of (vi), ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl toluene and styrene and (xii) the alkyd resin of (vi), methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, styrene and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. White paints are prepared from the dispersions as in (i), (ii), (ix) and (x) and varnishes are prepared by blending the dispersions as in (vi) and (vii) with butylated melamine resin solution, the dispersion as in (viii) with butylated methylol melamine resin solution, the dispersion as in (ix) with butylated methylol benzoguanamine resin solution, the dispersion as in (xi) with butylated methylol urea resin solution and the dispersion as in (xii) with an octyl alcohol-modified urea resin solution. The paints and varnishes are applied to phosphatized steel plates.
