    Abstract: Apparatus (and a corresponding method) for inducing or increasing the flow of blood in a patient comprises a base (284) contour to seat near a central region of a patient's chest, a substantially inelastic belt (282) configured to wrap around the patient's chest, and a powered tightener (280) coupled to the base and to the extremities of the belt whereupon, upon receipt of a particular signal the tightener moves the belt extremities in directions to tighten the belt around the patient's chest and depress the base (284) towards the patient's chest.     Abstract: The invention relates to a cardiac arrest chest compression apparatus, generally used in the field of the medical devices and meant to increase the blood flow by compressing the chest cavity of a person suffering from cardiac arrest. According to the invention, the apparatus comprises a flexible, substantially inelastic belt (40) wrapped around the patient's chest (12) and linked to a force converter. The force converter converts a downwardly directed force into a chest resultant which depresses the sternum, and also into two belt tightening resultants. The force converter comprises a pair of arm assemblies (16, 18), each of them having a pair of arms (22, 24) which are pivotally attached to a base (14). The base is positioned near the patient's sternum and the ends of the belt are attached to one end of each arm assembly. The opposite handle ends (30, 32) of the arm assemblies are pushed downwards to the patient's chest causing the tightening of the belt and the compression of the chest cavity.
