Abstract: L'invention a pour objet un procédé pour la détermination de la dose d'un coagulant devant être ajoute à un liquide à traiter et dans lequel se trouvent des particules colloïdales en suspension, nécessaire pour obtenir le clarification maximale de ce liquide.Selon ce procédé, on dispose d'une cuvette munie sur deux parois opposées d'électrodes essentiellement parallèles on effectue une pluralité de mesures de changement de densité optique, chaque mesure étant effectuée de la façon suivante on introduit une quantité de liquide à traiter dans la cuvette; on ajoute une dose prédéterminée de matière coagulante ou liquide afin de provoquer la floculation des particules colloîdales dans le liquide, on fait passer un faisceau plat de rayonnement entiérement dans le sens de la longueur dans le liquide dans la cuvette a une trés faible distance de l'une des électrodes et distance de l'autre électrode, tout en maintenant le faisceau de rayonnement parallèle aux électrodes; on mesure l'intensité du faisceau de rayonnement après son passage à travers la cuvette afin d'obtenir une première mesure de la densité optique du liquide; ensuite on applique un champ électrique entre les deux électrodes, forçant ainsi les particules colloïdales non floculées de se déplacer en s'éloignant d'une électrode et en s'approchant de la deuxième électrode ensuite, après un intervalle de temps prédéterminé, on mesure de nouveau l'intensité du faisceau de rayonnement après son passage à travers la cuvette et on obtient une deuxième mesure de la densité optique du liquide, tout en maintenant le faisceau de rayonnement à très faible distance de la première électrode; et on compare les deux mesures de densité optique pour déterminer le changement de la densité optique du liquide en fonction de la proportion de particules colloïdales dans le liquide qui n'ont pas floculé; les doses prédéterminées de matière coagulante ajoutées au cours des mesures de densité optique successives étant différentes; et on compare les résultats des mesures de changement de la densité optique obtenues à l'issue de chacune des opérations précédentes afin de déterminer la dose produisant le changement de densité optique minimal, celle-ci représentant la quantité de coagulant qui provoque une clarification optimale du liquide à traiter.

Abstract: In a system for decantation treating of liquid containing therein suspended material, the liquid to be treated is pulsatingly introduced into the bottom of a sludge bed and pulsated therein. The liquid is passed upwardly through the sludge bed at a predetermined speed whereby the suspended material is agglomerated and removed from the liquid. The liquid is forced through the sludge bed from the bottom to the top thereof in paths which are inclined both to the horizontal and to the vertical. Specifically, the liquid passes generally upwardly through an assembly of inclined flow control devices which are positioned within the sludge bed throughout substantially the entire height thereof. Sludge settles within the inclined passageways between the flow control devices for a slight distance until the sludge contacts an inclined bottom wall. The sludge then slides downwardly in an inclined manner along the bottom wall in a concentrated path or current. This concentrated path or current forces the liquid upwardly and away from the bottom wall, thereby creating a generally upwardly moving inclined path or current of liquid. The settling sludge and rising liquid thereby form concentrated currents in parallel but opposite inclined directions and increase the tendency of the suspended material to be agglomerated from the liquid.
