Abstract: A method for the preparation of formaldehyde by dehydrogenating methanol at 650-1050 deg C in the absence of oxygen is carried out in the presence of a metal in gaseous form. Preferably sodium is used as the metal, vaporised separately from the methanol. An inert gas supplied to the reaction zone is used to dilute the reagents.
