Abstract: Spent salts from a steel - hardening plant are mixed with FeSO4 in a neutral or alkaline medium to convert the cyanides into ferrocyanides and to form BaSO4. The mixing is first carried out in the dry state and then 10-40% water (w.r.t. the solids) is added in a strong countercurrent mixer. Subsequently, the resulting paste can be acidified with H2SO4 to pH 3 to form water-insol. heavy metal ferrocyanides. Finally, gypsum, MgSO4, quick lime or burnt dolomite can be added to effect complete solidification of the paste so that it can be safely dumped. Heat cooled during the process promotes the diffusion of the sulphate ion and, hence, the formation of BaSO4.
