Abstract: Solid HCHO concentrates which are stable to storage and contain 50-70 wt.% HCHO, useful for prepn. of aq. HCHO soln. contg. =70 wt.% HCHO, partic. for conversion to condensation resins, e.g. with phenols, urea, melamine, were prepd. by filling a hot conc. 50-70 wt.% HCHO soln. in a container of thermoplastic foil material which is inert to HCHO; tightly sealing the container immediately after filling so that foil material surrounds the filling in a skin-tight manner, and cooling the filled and sealed container, esp. with cooling-or ice-water or with cooling brine. The filled, closed container may be spread to a flat slab, by means of moulding device, and allowed to solidify to a solid slab with cooling.

Filled and sealed containers are pref. spread out to a flat layer by means of a moulding device and allowed to solidify to a flat slab by cooling.

Abstract: Waste water contg. phenol, phenol derivs. or phenol and formaldehyde is purified by treating the water with H2O2 in the presence of metallic iron or copper. The process is used to treat water from phenol, coke and gas mfr., from low temp. lignite carbonisation and esp. from the prodn. of phenol/formaldehyde resins. The process is cheap, completely effective and is independent of pH, unlike previous processes. The metal may be in the form of foils, threads or granules. Pref. the treatment is in an iron vessel and/or using a vessel with an iron agitator. The pref. iron used is V2A special steel. The iron surface used is pref. 1-20 m2/m3 of waste water. An activator is also pref. used, esp. sodium chloride or insoluble silicic acids, in amt. 0.1-0.2% based on the H2O2. The amt. of H2O2 used is pref. 7.5-8 mols./mol. phenol or phenol deriv.

Abstract: Waste water contg. phenol, phenol derivs. or phenol and formaldehyde is purified by adding 0.5-2 g./l. of a Na ethylenediamine tetraacetate/iron (III) trihydrate complex (C10H12N2/8FeNa.3H2O) followed by treating the water with H2O2. The process is used to treat water from phenol, coke and gas mfr., from low temp. lignite carbonisation and esp. from prodn. of phenol/formaldehyde resins. The process is cheap, completely effective, and does not require large amts. of added salts, unlike previous processes. The amt. of complex iron salt is pref. 1-2g./l. The pH used is pref. >8. The amt. of H2O2 used is pref. 8 mols./mol. phenol cpd. or 10 mols./mol. where formaldehyde is also present. The phenol content of the water is pref. =0.5% and formaldehyde =5%.

Abstract: In deodorising liquid manure with odour-inhibiting substances, a combination of aq. alkali chlorite or hypochlorite soln. and an aq. formaldehyde soln. are mixed into the liq manure. The alkali (hypo)chlorite soln. and the formaldehyde soln. is introduced separately from each other. Process gives rapid and effective deodorisation which is long lasting (>=3 months). The substances used are relatively rapidly and completely decomposed, so that on subsequent application of the deodorised liq. manure to fields no injurious substances find their way into the soil and plants are not adversely affected.
