Abstract: Process for producing 5- or 6-membered cyclic ethers (anhydropolyols) comprises subjecting polyols having at least 4 C atoms and at least 2 OH groups to cyclodehydration at at least 100 degrees C in the presence of water, an acid catalyst, an acid-stable hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen. Preferably the reaction temperature is 100-380 degrees C, preferably 180-280 degrees C. The H2 pressure is 1-20 MPa, preferably 3-10 MPa. The hydrogenation catalyst comprises Ru, Rh, Pd and/or Pt as metals or metal compounds. The hydrogenation catalyst is used in an amount of 0.001-10 (preferably 0.01-1) wt.% based on the polyol. The acid catalyst is a 1-10C aliphatic carboxylic acid, preferably formic, acetic or propionic acid. The acid catalyst is used in an amount of 0.1-20 (especially 0.5-10) wt.% based on the polyol. The polyol is a tetritol, pentitol or hexitol.

Abstract: The reductive cleavage of linear and cyclic acetals, especially formals, in an aqueous medium containing a formate takes place by hydrogenation with hydrogen in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst at a pH value of less than 7 at a temperature of over 200 .degree.C. The catalyst-poisoning effect of the formate is overcome at over 200 to 300 .degree.C, especially from over 200 to 280 .degree.C, so that, in a suspension procedure, the weight ratio of metal having hydrogenating activity to acetal can be much lower than in the prior art, namely less than 0.1.

Abstract: Intermolecular etherification of mono- or multivalent alcohols is carried out in the presence of an additional acid-stable hydrogenation catalyst in a hydrogen atmosphere. Process for the intermolecular etherification of mono- or multivalent alcohols and ether splitting comprises treating the alcohol in the case of etherification or the ether in the case of ether splitting in the aqueous phase in the presence of an acid catalyst at at least 100 degrees C and then treatment is carried out using an acid-stable hydrogenation catalyst in a hydrogen atmosphere.
