[Also in Division C1] A paper filler having reactive groups capable of absorbing dyes by reaction therewith is prepared by precipitating a silicate of an alkalineeanth metal or of Al, Sc, Y or La from an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution in the presence of organic water-soluble polymer (see Division C1). The reactive groups in the filler can be cross-linked with a polyvalent reagent to improve the bonding between the paper fibres and the filler. The polymer may be polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene urine, polyacrolein, polymethacrylic acid, polyethylene oxide, cationic or anionic starch, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl-3- methyl pyrrolidone, vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers, polyacrylamide, urea resin, melamine resin, may be dissolved in the reaction mixture before precipitation, or gradually added thereto during precipitation, or added in such a manner that a silicate core with an organically-modified shell is obtained.

Abstract: 1,235,981. Alkyltrihalosilanes. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. 29 Jan., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 4881/69. Heading C3S. Alkyltrihalosilanes are prepared by passing a gaseous olefin and a trihalo hydrogeno silane into a boiling mixture of the alkyltrihalosilane to be prepared and a platinum catalyst at a temperature of 30 to 150 C. and a pressure not substantially above atmospheric. The reaction may be continuous and an apparatus is described in which the reactants are introduced at the base of a column containing the boiling mixture and the reaction product is removed at the top and unreacted starting materials are recycled. The initial mixture is obtained by refluxing trihalohydrosilane, olefin and catalyst, the delivery of reactants beginning when the temperature approaches the boiling point of the reaction product. The catalyst may be platinum metal or compound, e.g. H 2 PtCl 6 , or those described in Specification 1,158,510. Propyl and butyl trichlorosilanes are prepared in the examples.
