Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating material and a printing ink improved in storage stability, floating tendency, and the amount of a solvent required by using carbon black containing silicon. SOLUTION: This coating material or printing ink contains a coating binder system and a pigment being carbon black containing 0.1-30 wt.%, based on the total weight of the carbon black, silicon in terms of silicon dioxide. The carbon black containing silicon can be produced, for example, by adding a silicon-containing compound to a starting material for carbon black. The silicon- containing compound is suitably an organosilicon compound such as an organosilane, an organochlorosilane, a siloxane, or a silazane. Advantageously, this compound is mixed with a starting material for carbon black itself. The silicon-containing carbon lack can be used very advantageously in the form of a combination thereof with a nacreous pigment and flaky aluminum.
