    Abstract: A volatile ferric halide such as the chloride is hydrolysed within a flame comprising a mixture of gases which burn to form water, the amount of oxygen or gas or gas mixture containing oxygen being at least sufficient to form enough water for the hydrolysis and the hydrogen or gas or gas mixture yielding or containing hydrogen being in excess of that required for said amount of water. Suitable hydrogen-containing gases are illuminating gas and methane; air is the preferred oxygen-containing gas; diluents such as nitrogen may be added to the gases led to the flame. The gases are preferably homogeneously mixed and led in laminar flow to the flame, and the discharge velocity from the burner may be several times the ignition velocity. The rim of the burner may be protected from the formation of "beards" by mechanical stripping, by the use of flushing gases flowing as a thin layer past said rim or by lowering the ignition velocity of the gases in the vicinity of the rim, e.g. by introducing air into the gases at the rim. To obtain fine particles with unsealed surfaces, the temperature of the flame is preferably kept below 1000 DEG C., and the aerosol initially resulting from the reaction allowed to coagulate, e.g. for over 5 secs., to an aerogel, before being separated; this may be done by whirling the reaction products in a large chamber or passing through long, preferably curved tubes.

    Abstract: A mixture of two or more metal or metalloid oxides, which have been produced by thermal decomposition from the mixture of halide vapours in the presence of hydrogen with or without added oxygen, is dispersed in a liquid medium with the aid of a minor amount of a phosphate and/or an alkali-metal silicate. Alumina/silica oxide dispersions may be more or less colloidal solutions of aluminium silicate. In examples, silicon or titanium tetra chloride or aluminium trichloride are decomposed to form aerogel oxides, to which water is added and also a small amount of sodium metaphosphate, or tri-metaphosphate. The mixture is then vigorously stirred with the addition of water glass.
