Abstract: A silica based solid material is claimed, which is modified on its surface with organosilicon compounds of formula ((RO)ySiR -SO3 )xM(power x ) (I) and (RO)ySi-R -SH (II). R , R = independently 1-12 C alkylene, 5-8 C cycloalkylene or units of formula (IIIa) or (IIIb); m, n = 0-6; M = H , NH4 or a metal ion with a valency of 1-4; H provides at least 5% of the ion exchange capacity of (I); y = 1-3; and R = independently H, CH3, CH2CH3 or propyl.

Abstract: A continuous process for the production of gamma -aminopropyl- trialkoxysilane and mixtures of primary and secondary aminosilanes comprises: (a) mixing gamma -chloropropyl- trialkoxysilane with ammonia in a desired ratio of reactants; (b) heating the mixture to the reaction temperature; (c) allowing the reaction to proceed in a pressure reactor with a sufficient residence time for complete conversion, during which the reaction mixture may pass through several temperature zones; (d) subsequently cooling the reaction mixture and if necessary adding an organic solvent as extraction agent; (e) separating the product gamma -amino trialkoxysilane or mixtures of primary and secondary aminosilanes from the resulting two-phase mixture, optionally by extraction; and (f) recycling the ammoniacal phase to the reactor either at stage the mixing or reaction stage.
