[Also in Division A5] Substituted s-triazines of the general formula where X is C 1-6 alkoxy, C 1-6 alkylmeroapto, azido or halogen, R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, C 1 _ 6 alkyl or alkenyl optionally substituted by chlorine or hydroxy, cyano, C 1-6 alkoxy or C 1-6 alkylmercapto, R 3 and R 4 are C 1-8 alkyl or alkenyl or aralkyl, or may be attached to one another to form a 5- to 7-membered ring, and one of R 3 and R 4 may represent hydrogen, and R 5 is C 1-6 alkyl, aryl or hydrogen, are prepared by reacting a cyanuric halide with an alkynylamine of formula and a compound of formula HNR 1 R 2 to give a a product where X is halogen, which is optionally further reacted with an alkyl mercaptan in the presence of an acid-binding agent, or with an alkali metal alkoxide or alkali metal azide. The initial reactions are generally carried out in the presence of an acid-binding agent. The products of the invention have herbicidal properties.
