    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle pivotal closure type power-operated assembly remotely controlling the opening or closing of a vehicle closing section and having power. SOLUTION: The closing assembly has a hidden power actuator remotely operated by a controller to open or close the closing section, i.e., a lift gate. The hinge member 18 of the power actuator 16 is coupled with a vehicle structure section pivotably around a hinge shaft 24 and rigidly fitted to the closing section. An armature is extended from a slender linear moving rack to the hinge member pivotably around a rack pivotal shaft. The armature is coupled with the hinge member 18 pivotably around a second pivotal shaft arranged in parallel with the hinge shaft 24 and the rack pivotal shaft 26. The rack is driven by a pinion gear train operated by a motor via a clutch. A hinge, the rack, the gear train, and the motor are wholly supported by a modular reinforcing tray 27 coupled with the structure section.

    Abstract: A power operating system for opening and closing a vehicle liftgate (12) has a pair of drive units (22, 22') supported on the vehicle roof and connected to the liftgate (12) for opening and closing the liftgate (12). Each drive unit (22, 22') includes a housing (38, 60) having a curved track (80) and a curved gear rack (48) that is bodily movable endwise in the housing (38, 60) and guided by the curved track (80), the rack (48) also serving as the drive link between the housing (38, 60) and the liftgate (12). The combined rack and drive link is extended and retracted by a pinion gear (40) that is journalled interiorly in the housing and engages the teeth of the curved gear rack (48). The pinion gear (40) is rotated by the output shaft (62) of the motor (24), which in turn is fastened to the side of the housing (38, 60). The motor (24) is a reversible electric motor and is adapted to be operably coupled to the vehicle ECU unit and preferably includes an internal transmission and electrically operated clutch controlled by the ECU unit.

The manual override (18) includes a pivoting connection (50) that interconnects the conduit lever (46) and the enclosure (12) to allow the conduit lever and the conduit (44) to pivot with respect to the enclosure selectively between a fixed position and a loose position. The detent (52) can either engage the conduit lever (46) and retain it in a fixed position, or disengage the conduit lever to allow the conduit lever and the conduit (44) to pivot. If the conduit (44) is allowed to pivot, the latching mechanism (14) can unlatch even if the cinching mechanism (16) fails to operate after it drives the fork bolt (20) to the primary latched position.
