Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a silica useful as a reinforcing filler for a silicone rubber composition by bringing an organic silicon compound selected from organosilane, organosiloxane and organodisilazane into contact with a hydrophilic precipitated silica in the presence of a mixture of water and a miscible organic solvent of an amount sufficient for promoting the reaction of the organic silicon compound with the hydrophilic precipitated silica. SOLUTION: An aqueous suspension of a hydrophilic precipitated silica is brought into contact with one or more kinds of organic silicon compound selected from an organosilane of formula I: R1aHbSiX4-a-b, an organosiloxane expressed by the average unit formula II: R2nSiO(4-n)/2 and an organodisilazane expressed by formula III: (R33Si)2NH in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid. A mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid, hydroiodic acid and sulfuric acid can be used as the acid catalyst. In the above formulas, R1 groups are each a 1-12C hydrocarbon group; R2 groups are each H, Cl or the like; R3 is a 1-12C hydrocarbon group; X groups are each a hydrolyzable group bonded to Si; (a) is 2 or 3; (b) is 0 or 1; a+b is 1-3; (n) is an integer of 2-3.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hydrophilic silica gel having high porosity without relying on a conventional method for producing an aerogel by heating a hydrophobic silica hydrogel having bonded organic substituents in an oxidizing atmosphere at a sufficiently high temperature to lower the hydrophobicity of the hydrophobic silica hydrogel by the oxidation of the organic substituents. SOLUTION: A silica hydrogel is brought into contact with a catalytic amount of a strong acid and a organosilicon compound selected from an organosilane of formula I, an oganosiloxane of formula II and an organodisilazane of formula III, preferably hexamethylsiloxane or dimethyldichlorosilane to form a hydrophobic silica hydrogel. This hydrophobic silica hydrogel is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at a sufficiently high temperature (300-1,000 deg.C) to lower the hydrophobicity of the hydrophobic silica hydrogel to obtain the objective hydrophilic silica gel. In the formulae, R1 is a 1-12C (organofunctional) hydrocarbon, X is a halogen or a 1-12C alkoxy, (a) is 0, 1 or 2 and (b) is 0 or 1.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to effectively remove the group VIII metals in the periodical table, especially platinum from an aq. soln. or polyorganosiloxane liquid and a resin. SOLUTION: In the removing method of metal contaminants from a soln. by using mercapto-functional silica xerogel, the mercapto-functional silica xerogel has >=400 m2/g specific surface area, at least 6 nm average pore diameter and at least 2 cm3/g pore volume. The mercapto-functional silica xerogel is especially effective to remove the group VIII metals in the periodical table such as platinum from a polyorganosiloxane liquid and a soln. containing a resin.

Abstract: The present invention is neutral-aged hydrophobic silica gels having a reduc ed surface area and a method for their preparation. The method comprises three steps, where in the first step a mixture comprising a silica hydrosol and colloidal silica is contacted with a strong mineral acid at a pH less than about 1 to form a silica hydrogel having incorporated therein colloidal silica. In the second step the silica hydrogel is aged at a pH within a range of about pH 3.5 to pH 8. In the thir d step the silica hydrogel is contacted with an organosilicon compound in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong acid to effect hydrophobing of the silica hydrogel to form a hydrophobic silica hydrogel having a surface area within a range of about 100 m2/g to 450 m2/g in the dry state. In a preferred method the hydrophobic silica hydrogel is further contacted with a sufficient quantity of a water-immiscib le organic solvent to convert the hydrophobic silica hydrogel into a hydrophobic silica organogel.

Abstract: The present invention is hydrophobic organosilicate-modified silica gels and a method for their preparation under neutral conditions. The method comprises two steps, where in the first step the pH of an organosilicate-modified silica hydrosol is adjusted with a base to within a range of about pH 3 to pH 7 to facilitate formation of an organosilicate-modified silica hydrogel. In the second step the organosilicate-modified silica hydrogel is contacted with an organosilicon compound in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong acid to effect hydrophobing of the organosilicate-modified silica hydrogel to form a hydrophobic organosilicate-modified silica gel having a surface area within a range of about 100 m2/g to 850 m2/g in the dry state. In a preferred process the hydrophobic organosilicate-modified silica hydrogel is contacted with a sufficient quantity of a water-immiscible organic solvent to convert the hydrophobic organosilicate-modified silica hydrogel into a hydrophobic organosilicate-modified silica organogel. A water soluble compound of cerium or iron may be added in the second step to improve the heat stability of the hydrophobic organosilicate-modified silica gel.
