    Abstract: A valve in the production flow line of an oil well closes a reed switch indicative of fluid being pumped through the line. The switch closure activates a first oscillator whose count is compared with a variable frequency oscillator having a frequency of approximately one half that of the first oscillator. The comparison is made over a given period of time to ascertain the percentage of time the valve has been open and passing fluid. Theoretically, the valve should be open 50 percent of the time because 50 percent of the time is taken on the downstroke of the pumping assembly when no production is occurring. The integrated timer is adjusted to shut down the system when the percentage of time the valve is open drops to the preselected amount, usually equal to or less than 50 percent. In response to the integration timer producing a signal, a shutdown timer is turned on which restarts the cycle after a preselected amount of time. When the system is restarted by the shutdown timer, a pump-up timer is turned on which is adjusted to allow for a desired pump-up time. As the pump-up timer is allowing the system to recycle, the integration timer is reset and the recycling is completed if the requirements of the integration timer are met. Otherwise, the unit is shut down again and the system recycled. A variable electronic scaler is connected to the output of the integration timer which monitors the output signals from the integrator timer. After the preset number of times the integration timer produces a signal, the scaler turns off the whole system. It can then be restarted manually. This provides a safety device for equipment failure such as breaking of the sucker rod. Means are also provided for recording the various timed cycles and also for monitoring the number of signals transmitted to the scaler, thus being indicative of the number of times the system has automatically shut down.

    Abstract: A packer is provided, one or more of which may be used to seal between a well casing and a tubing string placed inside the well casing. The well packer is provided with a bypass valve to permit flow of fluid through the packer inside the packing element to facilitate lowering the packer into the well and to facilitate lifting the packer out of the well. The pipe below the packer must be anchored to withstand upstrain exerted in tubing above the packer to cause setting of the packer, closing of the bypass valve and holding force to hold the packer in position in the casing after setting. The packer may be held in a retracted position, while lowering into the well, by screws or pins which shear when the setting upstrain is applied to the packer. A latch is provided to lock the packer in retracted position to hold the bypass valve open while the packer is being lifted from the well.

    Abstract: The apparatus and method provides the ability to selectively treat a producing zone in a well and to gravel pack an annulus in the well casing outside a screen type liner pipe. A tubing string extending from the surface of the well bore is connected to a packer by a crossover valve. Flow down the tubing string is directed to an annulus below the packer, then inwardly through the screen type liner, then upward through the crossover into the annulus above the packer and then to the earth''s surface. Communication from the crossover to the annulus above the packer may be selectively closed to permit a treating pressure to be exerted down the tubing to force a treating fluid into the producing zone. The treating pressure is isolated from the casing above the packer to protect the casing above the packer.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is an improved borehole shock absorber for use between down hole well tools such as between a hydraulic pump and packer to absorb the shock loading created by the pump and, thereby, avoid damage to the packer. The shock absorber includes at least two relatively moveable members, one of which is connected to the packer and one to the pump with a shock absorbing material located therebetween arranged to absorb the shock created by the pump. One of the members is to be provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced, elongated slots. The slots are located in the member adjacent the rubber so that when the shock absorbing material has been loaded, deformation in the slotted member can occur to permit additional deformation of the rubber and absorb shocks of a magnitude beyond the normal loading.
