Abstract: A dry powder medicine inhaler has an impeller non-concentrically disposed in a mixing chamber. A motor spins the impeller at high speed. A plunger introduces a dose of powdered medicine into the chamber so that all powder particles are available for intermixing, disaggregation and comminution. An aperture receives a first stream of air and passes it towards the mouthpiece for inhalation by the user. A wall has at least one aperture for diverting a portion of a main air stream into the aerosolizing chamber to mix with the particles to form a fine, low-density, low velocity, dry mist of powdered medicine for inhalation by the user.

Abstract: A spirometer includes a chassis (3) with an enclosed curved passageway (33). The passageway (33) has an inlet (17), for receiving the forced expiration of the user, and an outlet (35), through which the expiration may be exhausted from the passageway (33). A vane (37) is eccentrically and pivotally mounted in the passageway, between the inlet (17) and the outlet (35) and is moved by the user's forced expiration. The vane (37) pivots from a first position closing off the passageway to a succession of other open positions forming a widening gap between the vane and part of the passageway as the vane moves therethrough. The vane (37) is eccentrically positioned in the passageway. A vane position measuring system preferably using a Hall Effect device (73) measures the position of the vane over time, during the interval when the user blows into the spirometer. A microprocessor (79) converts the signal from the vane position measuring system into various diagnostic parameters applicable to the user's lung condition.

Abstract: A drug powder inhaler has a cover plate (50) pivotally attached to a lid (38) on an inhaler housing (32). A lever is pivotally attached to the cover plate. A blister pack disk (42) is rotatably mounted on the housing under the cover plate. A powder duct (122) in the housing extends from a staging chamber (124) underneath one end of the lever to an aerosolizing chamber (120). An actuator (146) in the housing is pressed to shear open a blister (44) on the blister pack disk, and thereby deliver the drug dose contents of the blister into the staging chamber. A switch (170) senses pressure in the mouthpiece, and switches on a motor (160) spinning an impeller (162) within the aerosolizing chamber when inhalation is detected.

Abstract: A dry powder inhaler (10) has a front section (12) holding a unit dose cartridge (100) over a mixing chamber (78). An impeller is rotatably mounted within the mixing chamber (78). A rear section (14) of the inhaler includes a motor (30), a breath actuated switch (40), and pins (28) for positioning the unit dose cartridge (100) in the front section and driving a plunger (26) through the unit dose cartridge (100), to deposit a powdered drug into the mixing chamber (78), as the front (12) and rear (14) sections are brought together. A filter wheel (86, 92) allows air to flow forward from the rear section (14) into the mixing chamber (78), but substantially prevents stray drug powder from migrating rearwardly to the rear section (14). Abstract: A method for inhalation of a dry powder drug includes the steps of providing a dry powder drug composition having a drug particle size of from about 1-7 microns and a mass median aerodynamic diameter of the delivered aerosol of from about 3.5 to 5.5 microns. This composition is loaded into an inhaler which is generally flow rate independent, and with the inhaler having an inspiration flow resistance of about .12 to .21 (cmH2O) over the range of about 15-60 L/min. The patient inhales the drug composition from the inhaler with an inspiration flow rate of about 15-60 L/min, resulting in a delivery efficiency measured by respirable fraction greater than 20 %.
