Abstract: The tandem differential mobility spectrometer (DMS)-ion modulator instrument provides improved resolution relative to traditional DMS for molecules with larger masses. The instrument includes multiple ion-bunching electrodes, each with an AC field synchronized to the transit time of the ion flow which is positioned downstream of a DMS. The ion bunching electrodes produce each a mobility-dependent modulation of the ion current. The ratio of AC to DC current provides a measure of the mobility of a large ion, even if it has little differential mobility, thereby extending the useful range of mobility characterization of a DMS system. The instrument does not require high voltages or high frequencies. Modulation before DMS separation or between tandem DMS separations produces a variable range of analyte and reactant ion densities as well as spatially separating negative and positive ions to reduce ion recombination.

The ion bunching electrode produces a mobility-dependent modulation of the ion current. The ratio of AC to DC current provides a measure of the mobility of a large ion, even if it has little differential mobility, thereby extending the useful range of mobility characterization of a DMS system. The instrument is more compact than a larger traditional ion mobility spectrometer and does not require high voltages or high frequencies. Modulation before DMS separation or between tandem DMS separations produces a variable range of analyte and reactant ion densities as well as spatially separating negative and positive ions to reduce ion recombination.

Abstract: A specimen collection receptacle formed by a channel disposed within the wall of a toilet bowl. The receptacle is located above the weir water line. The receptacle comprises a channel open to the interior of the bowl having opposed non-parallel side walls. The side walls may be joined opposite the opening. The side walls may be joined by a bottom wall. The bottom wall may be arcuate. The side walls may be non-planar. The walls may exhibit a roughened surface. The receptacle may comprise an optical window. The receptacle may comprise a cuvette. The receptacle may be in communication with one or more light emitting probes. The receptacle may be self-cleaning. The receptacle may comprise a replaceable module disposed in the wall of the toilet bowl. The receptacle may be located at the front of the toilet bowl. The receptacle may be disposed in a toilet bowl liner or insert.

Abstract: We disclose a novel diagnostic test strip which may be used to conduct biochemical assays for analytes in liquid samples. The disclosed test strip may be loaded with much smaller volumes of sample than traditional test strips. The disclosed test strip may be loaded with a precision dispenser instead of submersing the test strip into a larger volume of liquid sample. In addition, the disclosed test strip dissolves in aqueous fluid so it may be flushed into the sewer system. Consequently, it is not necessary to dispose of the disclosed test strip in biological waste containers.

Abstract: A urinalysis cassette and system that includes a toilet, into which a urinalysis cassette is inserted. The cassette is comprised of a roll of color-change-reagent strips. Each strip includes a plurality of strip sections wherein an absorbent material is imbued with color-change reagent, or onto which one or more color-change reagents are dispensed. The color-change-reagent strips are consecutive and contiguous on the roll. A cassette includes two spools arranged such that when the spools turn, the reagent strip moves from a first (source spool) to a second (waste spool). The section of the reagent strip that is between the two spools may be exposed to a urine specimen. The absorbent-material strips that have been exposed to both a urine specimen and a color-change reagent may undergo a chemical reaction. Selective-lighting illumination may be applied to absorbent-material strips that have undergone such chemical reactions to measure reflectivity of certain color wavelengths. This measurement may be expressed in terms of a digital readout, which may be displayed on a user interface.
