Abstract:
A fuel tank for a motor vehicle defining at least two interconnecting with the intercommunication being by way of a tank region of smaller cross-section than the chambers, defining a saddle tank configuration. A first of the chambers contains a fuel delivery unit and a second of the chambers has a refuelling vent valve which is the only refuelling vent valve of the tank. The two chambers also communicate with each other by way of a compensating line on the basis of the principle of communicating vessels. The tank also has means for venting the compensating line. The compensating line is such that equalisation of the filling levels of the intercommunicating chambers is possible only when there is a drop in level from the second chamber to the first chamber.

Described are a method of and an apparatus for supplying fuel for a motor vehicle comprising at least one hydrogen consumer wherein the hydrogen is liberated by catalytic reaction of a hydrogen donor provided as the fuel and recyclable fuel which has reacted in that operation is produced. The method comprises taking unreacted fuel from a first storage volume, filling at least one second storage volume separate from the first storage volume with reacted fuel and at least partially additionally using the first storage volume which has become vacant by virtue of unreacted fuel being taken therefrom, for storage of the reacted fuel. A fuel container arrangement includes at least one storage container for unreacted fuel and communicating with a removal container for supplying the fuel to the reaction, and a collecting container communicating with a storage container, when vacated of unreacted fuel, by way of a flow transfer conduit for transferring reacted fuel to the storage container.

A fuel tank for a motor vehicle, conveys fuel from the tank to an internal combustion engine of the vehicle, and includes a filling connection with a filling opening. The tank comprises an improved venting arrangement for venting the tank during refuelling and during operation thereof, with at least one fuel vapor filter by way of which the fuel tank is vented. The fuel vapor filter is of a two-stage configuration having first and second filter stages in the direction of flow in venting. A refuelling venting conduit is branched off after the first filter stage and is communicatable with the atmosphere or the tank interior.

In a method of pressure and/or gas volume compensation within a fuel tank in relation to movement-induced and/or temperature-induced changes in pressure and/or volume, as when fuel is drawn from the tank and upon refuelling of the tank, any changes in pressure outside a predetermined normal pressure range are compensated by condensation of the gaseous fuel or gasification of the liquid fuel within a system which is hermetically closed off at least above atmospheric pressure. The invention also provides a tank operating on that basis.
