PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide water-soluble peroxycarboxylic acid compounds and compositions that have storage stability and low or no odor, and also possess antimicrobial and bleaching properties.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to novel sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid compounds, compositions, and methods for making and using the compounds. The sulfoperoxycarboxylic compounds have storage stability, water solubility, and low or no odor. Further, the compounds are extracted from non-petroleum-based renewable materials. The compounds can be used as antimicrobial and bleaching agents. The compounds are also suitable for use as coupling agents.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the preparation of storage stable, low or no odor, water-soluble peroxycarboxylic acid compounds that also possess antimicrobial and bleaching properties.SOLUTION: The method for the preparation of the compound of formula I includes (a) a step of contacting a non-α sulfonated carboxylic acid with an oxidant under acidic pH conditions to produce a sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid. In the formula I, Ris a substituted or unsubstituted Cm alkyl group; Ris a substituted or unsubstituted Cn alkyl group; X is hydrogen, a cationic group, or an ester forming moiety; n and m are each 1 to 10; and m+n is equal to or less than 18.

The present invention relates to a two-part antimicrobial composition comprising at least one chlorine dioxide generating componenet comprising at least one metal chlorite and at least one acid-forming compound in a solid carrier, and at least one liquid aqueous component. The composition further comprises at least one antimicrobial fatty acid having from about 2 to about 15 carbon atoms, and preferably from about 6 to about 12 carbon atoms. The components, upon mixing, form a composition having a pH in the range of about 5 to about 10.
