Abstract: The invention describes a fail safe voltage responsive circuit for producing an output level indicative of the relationship between two voltage levels. The voltage responsive circuit includes a fail-safe comparison circuit which assumes alternative modes in response to an alternating signal introduced into the comparison circuit when the voltage levels are within a predetermined range, one relative to the other. When the voltage levels are outside the range or if a component fails, the comparison circuit ceases to alternate between modes. The voltage responsive circuit is used in a preferred application involving a fail-safe combustion control system wherein one voltage level is used to supply bias current to a photoconductive cell, the cell sensing the presence or absence of flame.

Abstract: Scanning apparatus includes a linear array of sensors so that there is effectively a series of independent sensor elements disposed in aligned relation generally perpendicular to a scanning axis. Each sensor is arranged to provide a data output in response to a sensed code mark and an output channel is coupled to each sensor. Logic responsive to detection of a first code mark by a sensor of the array enables at least one code sensitive group of output channels and disables other output channels so that only a limited group of channels are rendered responsive to subsequently detected code marks.

Abstract: A condition responsive system comprises a condition sensor for producing a fluctuating output signal having a predetermined frequency component in response to sensing of the condition to be detected, an output device arranged to assume a first state indicative of the presence of the condition being sensed when the sensor senses the condition and produces the fluctuating output signal and a second state indicative of the absence of the condition when the sensor does not produce the fluctuating output signal, and means responsive to the fluctuating output signal and connected in circuit between the sensor and the output device including an inductor for blocking signals of higher frequency than the frequency of the fluctuating output signal, a capacitor connected in series with the indicator for blocking signals of lower frequency than the frequency of the fluctuating output signal and a fail safe rectification circuit connected in circuit between the series combination of the capacitor and the inductor and the output device.

Abstract: A two-terminal photodetector comprising a photodiode and a plurality of active and passive components connected so that when connected to a source of current the voltage across the terminals is proportional to the illumination and is proportional by an amplification factor to rapidly changing illumination levels. In one embodiment the photodetector includes a first transistor having the photodiode connected in the emitter base circuit and a feedback resistor connected in the base collector circuit. This transistor is biased such that it is nearly saturated. Illumination on the photodiode causes the collector voltage to rise correspondingly. An output transistor is connected with its base joined to the emitter of the first transistor and a voltage divider connected between its emitter and collector. The output transistor has only a unity gain for low frequency signals but the gain is considerably increased for high frequency signals corresponding to rapidly changing illumination.
