Abstract: Tracing and testing of the edge (13) between two sheets (6, 7) that are to be welded using a projector (2) that generates a line pattern over the sheet edge which is recorded using a CCD camera (3). The recorded image is analyzed so that from the line pattern conclusions can be made about the gap between the edges and profile of the edges. The analysis of one image is used to control the lighting of the next image so that the line pattern is easy to visualize. An Independent claim is made for a corresponding device using a CCD camera to follow the gap between two plates that are to be welded together. Brightness control is achieved by altering the integration time of the CCD element or the shutter time.
