Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the wearing of a jaw in a fitting tool for a blind rivet. SOLUTION: The tool is used for fitting the blind rivet of a type having the rivet body 2 and a mandrel 3 extended passing through this body 2 and provided with a prescribed breaking neck. This tool has at least three balls 27 in each line for one or more lines. The balls 27 are held in such degree as not to excessively bite the mandrel 3 by cooperating with the tapered part inserting the mandrel 3 in the rivet 1. At the time of moving the tapered part to the direction leaving the rivet body 2, the balls 27 are bitten to the mandrel 3 to hold the mandrel 3. At the time of continuing the further movement in the same direction, the rivet body 2 is widened and the mandrel 3 is broken at the prescribed neck for breaking. The ball device is not worn so quicker as the conventional jaw device.

Abstract: A rivet setting tool has a nosepiece 11 at the front of a housing 10. An inner housing 20 has a taper section 22 towards the front and an end cap 21 at the rear. A draw bar 24 is located within the inner housing and has a conical section 25 which cooperates with the taper section. One or more rows of ball passages 26 are arranged circumferentially around the conical section and in which balls are located for a degree of radial movement. The stem 3 of a rivet 1 is passed along a hollow passage 28 within the conical section. A spring 29 biases the conical section towards the taper section which causes the balls to be forced into engagement with the stem to grip it. Rearward movement of the inner housing intensifies the gripping pressure and enables the stem to be severed from the rivet body 2.

Abstract: Rivets are delivered from a feed chute to a transfer location and blown through a feed tube to a loading device. The presence of a rivet is sensed both at the transfer location and at the loading device and a fault indicator is operated in the event a rivet sensed and transported from the transfer location does not wind up in the loading device. The operator hits the reset button which blows clean air thru the feed tube in an attempt to free the jammed rivet. In the event this does not occur, the system assumes the operator cleared the jam and loads the next rivet into position to be transferred and continues the cycle.

Abstract: The blind rivet setting apparatus has rows of balls to act on the rivet shaft through a cone unit for a durable grip without distortion. The ball system, to set blind rivets (1), has a nose piece (11) to receive and align the rivet shaft (3), so that its axis is centered on the axis of a cone unit (22). The cone unit guides balls (27) to give a grip, with a durable gripping action without distorting the rivet shaft when the cone unit is moved from the rivet body (2). The cone unit is next to the nose piece, with an opening for the rivet shaft to pass through. A number of balls, in one or more rows of at least three balls, are positioned to make contact with the cone unit and the rivet shaft, with spring tension on the balls against the rivet body. A mechanism moves the balls away.

Abstract: A ball device for setting blind rivets is provided. The device features one or more rows of balls of at least three balls per row, and a taper section which cooperates with the balls to grip the mandrel of the blind rivet. Upon movement of the taper section, the balls dig into the mandrel to grip, and consequently pull the mandrel in the desired direction. The device features a longer life than similar devices utilizing jaws to grip the mandrel.

Abstract: A system for first setting a blind rivet and then verifying the correctness of the set comprising a rivet setting tool to set the rivet and computer logic to verify the correctness of the set. The setting tool includes a jaw assembly for holding the stem of the rivet's mandrel fitted to an axially movable pulling shaft. Both the pulling force of the setting tool and the displacement of the pulling shaft are measured and the measurements are interpreted by an integrator to determine the total energy of the setting process. The determined total energy is then compared with an ideal total energy to assess whether or not the set of the particular rivet is acceptable. Other quantitative comparisons may be made against other ideal values.
