Abstract: A dynamic synchronous transfer mode (DTM) network comprises first and second unidirectional buses and a plurality of nodes, with each node having means for selecting a bus when initiating a call to another node S2. When a first node wishes to call a second node, a first node processor calculates, for the selected bus, a ratio based on the number of previous reservations made by the first node and the number of previous reservations relating to calls to or from the first node S3. The first node reserves one or more channels for the call if the calculated ratio is below a threshold S5, otherwise the second node makes the reservation S6. This overcomes the unfair operation of the network caused by the dual-bus topology and hence the inherent asymmetric nature of the network.
