The upper end of the zinc can 10 of a Leclanche cell is bent inwards to form a support for a washer 18 defining a space 30 above the depolarizer 14 for storage of liquids formed during the cell discharge. Sealing compound 20 covers the washer 18 and also flows into an annular space bounded by the outer surface of the bent over end of the can and a wrapping assembly consisting of a paper tube 26 and steel shell 28. A gas vent is formed by a gas permeable washer 22. The downward force exerted by the steel cap 24 on the sealing compound 20 and washer 18 improves the seal against leakage of liquid from the space 30.
