Abstract: 1,204,830. Inert batteries. ESB Inc. 11 March, 1969, No. 12779/69. Heading H1B. Electrolyte entering an inert battery through a filling port in the top is directed through the electrode-separator assembly before reaching the space between the assembly and the container side by a deflector which, with the assembly and the container side, defines a space to accommodate air displaced from between the electrodes. As shown in Fig. 6, conical deflector 32 secured to the wrapping 22 around the assembly of electrodes 10, 15 of an Mg-Agbl/Ag battery ensures that the electrolyte passes through the spiral assembly before entering the peripheral space. With electrolyte passing gap 33 between the deflector 32 and cell top 31 the deflector 33 acts as a Venturi to suck air out of the peripheral space and electrode assembly. In other embodiments (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the deflector is fastened also to the top 31 or merely contacts the sidewall 23. In the latter case air is vented from the peripheral space when the pressure rises.
