    Abstract: A zinc electrode containing a mercuric sulfide additive to reduce gassing at the zinc electrode which is used as the negative electrode in a heat sterilized silver-zinc alkaline battery. The mercuric sulfide effectively reduces gassing at the zinc electrode without adversely affecting the capacity of the heat sterilized battery, whereas the conventional mercuric oxide additive reduces the capacity of the heat sterilized battery. The mercuric sulfide additive may be used in combination with a lead sulfide additive.
