Abstract: Production of a polymeric material involves: dissolving a photochromic agent in a solvent or mixture of solvents to obtain a photochromic impregnating solution (1); impregnating a cross-linked, transparent, hydrophilic polymeric material with (1); rinsing the material with an aqueous solution to replace the impregnated solvent with the aqueous solution; and recovering the resulting photochromic polymeric material. An Independent claim is included for a hydrophilic material obtained by polymerizing a base composition comprises (meth)acrylic acid, at least one radically polymerizable hydrophilic monomer different from (meth)acrylic acid, and at least one (meth)acrylate material bearing an alicyclic hydrocarbon group.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method for making a transparent polymer material with little tendency to accumulate deposit. The method consists in immersing a transparent polymer matrix in a solution in a solvent for swelling the polymer matrix of a composition comprising a zwitterion polymerizable monomer and an agent for cross-linking the monomer to cause the polymer matrix to swell and become impregnated with the composition, optionally removing the matrix from the solution and hardening the composition impregnated within the matrix, said hardening being carried out in the presence of a polymerization initiator initially present in the matrix or the swelling solution. The invention is useful for making contact lenses and intraocular implants.
