Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain an oxygen permeable transparent major portion hydrophilic material by constituting this material of a polymer material containing two interpenetrating polymer network structures containing a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane polymer network structure and a hydrophilic polyacrylic acid network structure. CONSTITUTION: A soft silicone contact lens is produced from a polymeric oxygen permeable transparent major portion hydrophilic material containing two interpenetrating polymer network structures consisting of a matrix comprising a molded hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane polymer and a hydrophilic polyacrylic acid network structure polymerized in a silicone matrix from a crosslinking agent-containing acrylic acid soln. The transparent major portion hydrophilic material is produced by diffusing a polydimethylsiloxane material in an acrylic acid soln. containing at least one crosslinking agent and one photopolymerization initiator to wet the same and subsequently polymerizing acrylic acid in the silicone matrix by ultraviolet irradiation.
